The volcanic mineral, zeolite, inside the pouches is ionic and absorbs all odor and smell inside the vehicle. Be careful though, the pouch needs to stay out of the sunlight as the sun removes the odor from the pouch.
One of my clients commented that each morning when she went out to the car, it smelled fresh. By the end of the day however, it smelled like smoke again. I asked where she kept her pouch. She said in the back window. So overnight, the pouch worked very well and absorbed all the smell (cigarette smoke in this case). However, when the sun came up and shone on the car and the pouch, the pouch released everything back into the air. The moral is – keep the pouch out of direct sunlight until you want to re-energize it.

On my way out of town, I spilled a latte (coffee and steamed milk) in the back of my SUV. I was at the airport and was leaving for a week.
