Auto Fresh-N – March Special

March tends to be wet and miserable in many areas of North America.  Here in Vancouver it’s raining and cold.

You can’t avoid damp feet or muddy shoes as you climb in and out of your car.

Choose from black/grey or greens. 2 pouches come in each package.

Over the next few months, until the weather really warms up your car can start to smell.  The dampness from your shoes seeps into the carpet and a musty odor flows through the car.  If you have kids or dogs, the smell grows.

Unfortunately most of us don’t drive far enough or have the heat on high enough to dry the car out, so we’re stuck with a damp car until the weather warms up.

Auto Fresh-N pouches are an effective solution to remove car smell.  As air moves throughout the car it travels over the pouches and the zeolite inside the pouches grabs the car odor, trapping it inside the mineral.  The zeolite has a negative charge and will pull air and moisture to itself.

We had a very graphic demonstration of this in our production facility last week.  Zeolite can be spilled on the floor while filling the pouches.  The floor was damp from people walking across the floor.  As the morning progressed, little rivers traveled across the floor to where the zeolite granules had been spilled. Our first thought was that the floor wasn’t level so we investigated further. We discovered that the floor is level and the zeolite was drawing the water all the way across the floor from multiple directions. Even we are surprised at how powerful the mineral is occasionally.

The interior of a car isn’t as large as our production facility.  Our Auto Fresh-N packages include 2 pouches which contain more than enough mineral to remove car smell.

Best of all, when the warmer weather arrives, you can place your pouches in the sun for daylight hours which will re-energize the zeolite and continue to use your Auto Fresh-N for several years.

Zeolite will also work on other smells in the car.  Wet dog is a smell most of us don’t like.  While we can’t take the smell out of the dog for the drive home, we can make sure your car doesn’t smell like dog forever.

A girlfriend of mine bought a pre-owned, non-smoking vehicle.  Unfortunately, the vehicle had been smoked in.  She tried everything! She placed Auto Fresh-N pouches under each front seat and the smell was gone in 2 days.  It has never returned.

Auto Fresh-N pouches absorb until exposed to sunlight so place them under the front seats.

Indoor Air Quality

The air quality inside your home can be 100X worse than the air outside and newer homes can be far worse than older ones says Mike Holmes in October 2009.  Newer homes are designed and built more air tight to increase the energy efficiency.  The result is that indoor air becomes trapped and the VOC’s ( Volatile Organic Compounds) that off-gas from furniture, building materials, carpets, mould and allergens build.  The bad air leads to allergic reactions and health concerns.

There are many things we can do to improve the air quality inside our homes.

Change your furnace filter often and use a HEPA filter that will trap particulates.

Ultraviolet light can be used to kill bacteria, mould and viruses.  UVC irradiates and breaks down microorganisms by disrupting their molecular bonds which makes them unable to reproduce and”kills” them.

Plants are another way to help the air quality. The top 5 plants, according to the University of Georgia, are:

  1. Purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa)
  2. English ivy (Hedera Helix)
  3. Variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa)
  4. Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus)
  5. Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida)

Look for natural cleaning products.  There are lots of microfibres on the market which use water and the fibres to clean.  Ha-Ra products are some of the best I’ve found.

We’ve also added a new product to our line, Home Fresh-N.  2 odour and VOC removing pouches that you can place in closets or around the house

Healthy Homes

Having a healthy home these days, usually means being more eco friendly.

Michelle Hopkins of the Canwest News Service writes a good article called Simple ways to make your home eco friendly.

In her article she has some simple suggestions which include:

Getting rid of petroleum based candles.  “They smell nice because they are chock-full of dyes and can emit benzene and other toxins into the air, decreasing your indoor air quality. Soy and beeswax are the best candles because they are clean-burning.”

Drinking fair trade and shade grown organic coffee.

Buying vegetables more often so you throw out less.  We can help with our Crisper Fresh-N product – for crisper vegetables, longer.

Purchasing dual flow toilets.  This type of toilet has been used in Europe for years.  When we visited 10 years ago, I had to ask what the 2 buttons on the top of the toilet were for.  One is for a little flush and the other for a larger flush – you get the idea.

Planting trees and shrubs which shade the house in the summer and helps to keep the heat in the winter.  I hadn’t thought of this one.  Michelle suggests different types of trees for different locations.

Small steps!  If we can adjust the way we live a bit at a time, we can make a lasting impact to the world we live in.  My husband quite often accuses me of  trying to change too many things all at once and therefore nothing happens.  So now, we pick one thing to change every month.  This month, it’s digging the coffee grounds into the clay soil around the roses.  Working the coffee grounds into the clay makes for a healthier soil.  Adding our zeolite mineral to the mix helps the soil as well.

We’d love to hear from you.  Post your tips and ideas in the comment section below.  We’ll pick at least one each month and send you a product as a thank you!

Compost and Garbage

I was watching the news last night.  Metro Vancouver is in a heated debate about what to do with their garbage.  The Vancouver Sun says, “The Metro garbage debate is likely to keep raging until September — when the region releases a draft of its new solid-waste management plan — and beyond.”

A deal was signed with Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre Ltd. to take 50,000 extra tons of organic material and turn it into soil and mulch.  This soil is extra rich and will naturally help to grow greener, lusher lawns, firmer vegetables and brighter flowers.

It looks like we will be starting kitchen composting as early as February 2010.

Some tips for getting a jump on this ruling.

1.  Look for a ceramic jar with a lid or a metal pail to put your compost in.  Plastic pails will start to stink very quickly, but a ceramic jar or metal pail won’t smell as bad.

2. Most organic scraps can be added to your kitchen compost bin.

Vegetable scraps, onion and potato peelings, apples cores, lettuce cores, banana peels, rinds from cantaloupe or watermelon…

3.  Chop or shred the pieces into small pieces so they’ll break down and decompose faster.

4.  Coffee grounds and tea bags are also great to add to your compost bin.  They are rich in vitamins and nutrients which will help to reduce odors produced by rotting organics.

5.  Paper and cardboard is also great to add.  It will contribute to a richer compost.

6. Add a teaspoon of Bin Fresh-N to the compost bin a few times each week.  It will absorb the methane gas and carbon dioxide released as the organics decompose.

7.  When you mix your organics from the kitchen with your garden compost, dig, bury and cover the kitchen organics to create a richer soil.

8.  Mix the compost into your garden and spread over your lawn.

5 Tips to a Healthy Home

1. Test your Indoor Air Quality.

Heating and cooling systems, cleaning supplies, and other Volatile Organic Compounds products and materials can be regularly evaluated to improve indoor air quality. You may also use a Carbon Monoxide monitor to test CO levels in your home.

2. Improve ventilation.

Take advantage of Spring! Leave windows and doors open. Also remember that using exhaust fans in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms significantly improves ventilation, and helps eliminate moisture and toxic chemicals.

3. Control household humidity levels.

Keeping humidity at the optimum level is important in controlling the growth of toxic mold and other biological contaminants. This can be done by eliminating water leaks and sources of standing water, as well as installing a humidifier.

4. Have your HVAC system cleaned.

Regularly cleaning, servicing and maintaining your HVAC system is crucial for healthy indoor air quality. This will prevent the build-up of dirt, dust and toxic molds, guarantee the efficiency of your HVAC system and decrease energy costs.

5. Be aware of chemicals found in products.
Dramatically improve indoor air quality by replacing toxic and high in Volatile Organic Compounds cleaning products with eco friendly ones.

Did you know that….

  • Fresh air is one of the top natural cleaners around. Best part about it is it’s free of chemicals, and costs nothing to use; just open the windows!
  • If your furnace’s blower is not cleaned regularly, it can become a breeding ground for dirt, dust mites and toxic molds.
  • Your air conditioner drip pan can potentially hold standing water and grow mold, which would then be blown directly into your air ducts and out through the vents of the entire house.
  • Condenser coils can rust and contain build-up of corrosion, which is not only harmful to the air quality but also decreases the efficiency of your HVAC system and increases energy costs.
  • Avoiding the use of conventional cleaning products isn’t always possible. Remember: keep your house well ventilated when using them, and help preserve your indoor air quality by storing harmful chemicals and volatile compounds (such as paints, solvents, cleaners and pesticides) away from occupied spaces and air ventilation intakes.
