Indoor Air Quality

The air quality inside your home can be 100X worse than the air outside and newer homes can be far worse than older ones says Mike Holmes in October 2009.  Newer homes are designed and built more air tight to increase the energy efficiency.  The result is that indoor air becomes trapped and the VOC’s ( Volatile Organic Compounds) that off-gas from furniture, building materials, carpets, mould and allergens build.  The bad air leads to allergic reactions and health concerns.

There are many things we can do to improve the air quality inside our homes.

Change your furnace filter often and use a HEPA filter that will trap particulates.

Ultraviolet light can be used to kill bacteria, mould and viruses.  UVC irradiates and breaks down microorganisms by disrupting their molecular bonds which makes them unable to reproduce and”kills” them.

Plants are another way to help the air quality. The top 5 plants, according to the University of Georgia, are:

  1. Purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa)
  2. English ivy (Hedera Helix)
  3. Variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa)
  4. Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus)
  5. Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida)

Look for natural cleaning products.  There are lots of microfibres on the market which use water and the fibres to clean.  Ha-Ra products are some of the best I’ve found.

We’ve also added a new product to our line, Home Fresh-N.  2 odour and VOC removing pouches that you can place in closets or around the house

Not all fruit and vegetables should be kept in the fridge

Did you know that you shouldn’t keep all your fruits and vegetables in the fridge?  I knew that bananas were kept on the counter, but I didn’t know that nectarines, plums and tomatoes shouldn’t be refrigerated either.

Other fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be stored together in your fridge.  That’s why you have two crispers.  Apples, apricots and cantaloupes emit a large volume of ethylene gas as they ripen.   They shouldn’t be stored with your broccoli and brussel sprouts.

You can download a pdf from the Suzuki Foundation which talks about which fruits and vegetables should be refrigerated, which shouldn’t be and which ones can be kept together.   The pdf has some great tips – click here for the pdf.

Our local radio station has a report each day by the “Queen of Green” from the Suzuki Foundation.  Lindsay Coulter is the Queen of Green and she has some great tips on greening your environment.

Fundraising

Fundraising is an important part of almost every organization. Whether for school, for sports, for the church or even to help out a family, we’ve all been involved at some point.

Some of the things we’ve done when selling Fresh-N products to make the fundraising more FUN have been to play games.

Toss the Diva – like a bean bag toss game, if you Toss the Diva and it lands inside the box you’ve drawn on the floor, you win a prize.

Smelliest Shoe/Sports Equipment Contest – bring in your smelliest shoe or piece of sports equipment and the winner gets a prize.

Grossest fridge story – everyone has a story about something going bad in a fridge. Tell the story and Win!

For other fundraising suggestions and options be sure to check out the Better Fundraising Ideas website.

If you’d like to find out more about fundraising options with Fresh-N Home Products, fill out the form on our Fundraising page.

Frozen Vegetables

Frozen Vegetables Belong in the Freezer, not Your Crisper

Has this every happened to you?

You go to the fridge to grab a head of green, leafy lettuce, envisioning a wonderful salad, and instead pull out a frozen, crispy ball of greens.  What happened?  How is it possible that fresh vegetables can become frozen in the crisper?

You’ve changed the fridge settings to a warmer temperature, and you’ve adjusted the crisper’s humidity levels and yet, there are still some items that continue to have icicles on them. And to add insult to injury, there is a puddle forming on the bottom shelf of your fridge, where a recent thaw has occurred.

Are you as frustrated as I am with this? Well, it appears there is a reason that this happens.  When moisture is introduced to the fridge, via our vegetables, which our local grocers insist on misting, along with the normal process of condensation, the result is a buildup of moisture that the fridge is not equipped to diminish.  When there is too much moisture in the fridge, the fridge needs to work harder, and therefore; the temperature swing begins, with the collected moisture freezing, and affecting anything near it.  Then when the fridge stops running, the temperature gets warmer and the thaw begins…. And the cycle continues.

I have done lots of research and found that this is a common concern, and one that seems not to have lasting solution; however, we have found that our Fresh-N Fridge and Fresh-N Crisper pouches not only reduce the moisture in our fridge, and stop the freeze from happening, but also lessens the running time, as it the fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to regulate the temperature. The result of all of this is that our fresh vegetables stay crisper, longer.

West Coast Christmas Show

Every season we choose a few consumer shows to participate in. This fall we have chosen the West Coast Christmas Show. We participated in the show last year, had a great time and met some fantastic people, so decided to join the fun for a second year.

This year our booth is #257 and we are directly across from the Home for the Holidays Presentation Stage, which unfortunately is at the other end of the building from the Holiday Spirits Tastings.

In our booth you’ll find great stocking stuffers. We have something for everyone, from Dad’s golf bag with Gentlemen Gems to dry out his golf shoes; to Sportzgemz5 for your nephew stinky hockey bag – so he can have dry gloves each game; to Diva Diamondz for your favorite girlfriend who LOVES shoes and wants to keep all her shoes store bought fresh. We also have Kitchen Fresh-N for Grandma who always has a full fridge and doesn’t want the cranberries tasting like the onions. Pet Fresh-N are a must have for your aunt that adores her cats! and lots more.

On the Home For The Holiday Presentation Stage, the main stage across from our booth, Anna Olsen, the host of Sugar on Food Network Canada will be demonstrating her unique creations to inspire cooks-at-home to create more imaginative holiday meals. Karl Lohnes, Canadian design guru will teach and entertain with the latest in design and décor ideas for your home this holiday season.

As you enter the West Coast Christmas Show, you will be welcomed by a wonderful array of dozens of decorated Christmas trees, all part of the Festival Of Trees where local businesses and charities will decorate trees and compete for a grand prize.  Walk through the corridor of beautifully decorated trees and stop to watch and listen to school choirs and bands performing Christmas carols. It will be sure to rekindle your Christmas Spirit for the coming Holidays.

With 27 days remaining before Christmas, the West Coast Christmas Show’s timing is perfect for visitors to stock up on holiday entertaining needs and discover new ideas on home decorating and entertaining for a fun-filled Holiday Season.

Pet Odor

Have you ever walked into a house and smelt the cat or in many cases, the cats? Cat odor is bad, but there are worse smells.

A while back, while I was still involved with a home party company, I went out to give a presentation. I’ll never forget the hostess opening the door and just about being knocked off my feet as the stench of animals wafted out the door. I briefly thought – NO WAY, I can’t handle this! The hostess had worked so hard collecting pre-show orders and was so excited that I took a deep breath of night air, pasted on my show face and went inside.

After navigating a narrow hallway stacked to the ceiling with boxes, glancing into a kitchen where you couldn’t see a space on the counter top or table and lifting my clothing rack over the sofa, I finally found a small space of floor to set up my display.

I found one source of the horrible odor when I looked behind the sofa. A wall to wall to ceiling ferret cage dominated the room. I think there were 4 ferrets in total. That wasn’t all. There were multiple cats too. Kittens bounced on the sofa and a very large, furry cat resided on the back of a chair. By now my eyes are watering, not from allergies, but from the smell.

It was the shortest presentation in history. When I arrived back home, I unwrapped my clothing rack and left it in the garage. It resided there for a week or so while the pet odor dissipated.

Since then and until I finished my home party career, I asked about pets in the home when I booked the parties.

That experience made me very sensitive to pet odor in my own home and the response of guests to those odors. We have 2 cats and a dog. My girlfriend, Kim Plumley, was over a few weeks back. Kim is not fond of animals in the house. It was great to hear her confirm that we have zero pet odor in our home!
