Auto Fresh-N – March Special

March tends to be wet and miserable in many areas of North America.  Here in Vancouver it’s raining and cold.

You can’t avoid damp feet or muddy shoes as you climb in and out of your car.

Choose from black/grey or greens. 2 pouches come in each package.

Over the next few months, until the weather really warms up your car can start to smell.  The dampness from your shoes seeps into the carpet and a musty odor flows through the car.  If you have kids or dogs, the smell grows.

Unfortunately most of us don’t drive far enough or have the heat on high enough to dry the car out, so we’re stuck with a damp car until the weather warms up.

Auto Fresh-N pouches are an effective solution to remove car smell.  As air moves throughout the car it travels over the pouches and the zeolite inside the pouches grabs the car odor, trapping it inside the mineral.  The zeolite has a negative charge and will pull air and moisture to itself.

We had a very graphic demonstration of this in our production facility last week.  Zeolite can be spilled on the floor while filling the pouches.  The floor was damp from people walking across the floor.  As the morning progressed, little rivers traveled across the floor to where the zeolite granules had been spilled. Our first thought was that the floor wasn’t level so we investigated further. We discovered that the floor is level and the zeolite was drawing the water all the way across the floor from multiple directions. Even we are surprised at how powerful the mineral is occasionally.

The interior of a car isn’t as large as our production facility.  Our Auto Fresh-N packages include 2 pouches which contain more than enough mineral to remove car smell.

Best of all, when the warmer weather arrives, you can place your pouches in the sun for daylight hours which will re-energize the zeolite and continue to use your Auto Fresh-N for several years.

Zeolite will also work on other smells in the car.  Wet dog is a smell most of us don’t like.  While we can’t take the smell out of the dog for the drive home, we can make sure your car doesn’t smell like dog forever.

A girlfriend of mine bought a pre-owned, non-smoking vehicle.  Unfortunately, the vehicle had been smoked in.  She tried everything! She placed Auto Fresh-N pouches under each front seat and the smell was gone in 2 days.  It has never returned.

Auto Fresh-N pouches absorb until exposed to sunlight so place them under the front seats.

Mompreneur scores against stink

I was honored to meet with Troy Landreville of the Langley Advance who interviewed me for the article below. This is one of the best descriptions of what our product does that I have read yet.

Thank you Troy!

The gag reflex some get from the noxious odour of bacteria-ridden sports equipment may be a thing of the past, if a local woman has anything to say.

A local entrepreneur believes she has a solution for moms and wives who feel the need to pull on Hazmat suits and gas masks every time they walk into their garages or basements.

Langley mom and entrepreneur Wendy Ratel has distributed SportzGemz to retail sporting goods stores across Canada, including Offside Pro Shops, located inside the Langley Sportsplex. Troy Landreville/Langley Advance

Wendy Ratel, a Langley mom of three, is the driving force behind SportzGemz.

SportzGemz sells beanbag-style pouches filled with the volcanic mineral zeolite. The pouches are placed inside sports equipment such as gloves and shinpads to eliminate bacteria and noxious odours.

After years of driving her son and two daughters to hockey, ringette, basketball, softball and golf practices through the years, Ratel felt enough is enough.

“There has to be a way to enjoy the sports, have the kids benefit and not have everything smell like sweat,” she said.

The smell was bad enough, but when Ratel’s daughter’s legs burned from bacteria in catching pads (softball), she said the problem became a “full-time focus.”

“I went looking for a solution that was natural, that would solve the problem,” Ratel said.

Sprays and powders weren’t the solution, Ratel noted.

Sprays encapsulate the smell and drop it into the fabric, they don’t eliminate it, Ratel said, adding that many sprays have toxins and chemicals in them as well.

“Add that to the smell of sweat and you have a nasty mix,” she said. “The kids complained about the powders. They didn’t like the residue left behind and when used in skates or cleats, the powder ended up between their toes and that didn’t feel very good.”

After months of research and trial and error, a natural mineral was found. According to Ratel, this mineral – zeolite – absorbed the smell and when placed near the equipment, the ionic charge of zeolite draws the odour to it and actually absorbs the smell inside itself.

Ratel said zeolite has two properties: first, it dries fast enough so the bacteria doesn’t get a chance to appear, and second, there is a minor silver content in the mineral itself, and silver is anti-microbial, “so the mineral inherently has microbial properties to it.”

“Even with three hockey bags in the garage, you could walk in without your eyes watering,” she said. “Better yet, the mineral is non-toxic, so the mineral could work on the equipment, but doesn’t leave behind a residue that coats the equipment and can potentially be absorbed into the skin.”

Zeolite also dries, Ratel noted, adding that hockey gloves and skates were dry in about five hours.

“When a kid is on the ice five or six times a week, equipment usually doesn’t dry out,” Ratel said. “Gloves can be wet to touch. The bacteria growing inside the gloves can causes rashes on the hands and the smell is horrific.”

Ratel said using drying methods such as hanging equipment on hockey trees is effective because it separates the items and gives them room to breathe, but it doesn’t solve the problem.

“Simply drying the material doesn’t deal with the bacteria build-up, nor does it deal with the smell,” she said. “If you use [SportzGemz products] in connection with the things you are already doing, like washing the equipment periodically or hanging it off [hockey] trees, then you actually walk into a garage and not get knocked over by the smell.”

National Hockey League linesman and Langley resident Brad Lazarowich travels with SportzGemz pouches wherever he officiates, according to Ratel.

Ratel’s and Lazorwich’s daughters had played softball together, hence the connection.

“He loves that his skates are dry and there isn’t a smell in the hotel room from his skates,” Ratel said. “He is responsible for his own equipment, so he keeps it with him all the time.”

SportzGemz was the official gift sponsor for the pre-Olympic exhibition women’s hockey game between Russia and Slovakia, Feb. 8 at the Langley Events Centre. A total of 70 sets of SportzGemz pouches were distributed to players on the Russian and Slovak teams.

“The ladies said they were very excited to receive them,” Ratel said. “They were trying them out in the dressing room.”

Olympic exposure aside, SportzGemz is still gaining traction.

“We’ve been in the market for two years,” Ratel said. “The moms love it; the dads are still a little harder to persuade.”

Ratel said SportzGemz is very much cash-flow driven.

“The cash we bring in gets put back into the company,” Ratel said. “I’m a sports mom first, and a business woman second, until my kids are finished school.”

Ratel’s goal is to have SportzGemz in every junior sports bag in North America.

“It’s a huge need, when you are talking about the bacteria and the smell, and the fact this equipment is expensive,” she said. “If you can dry it out and take the smell out of it, you can extend the life of the equipment, as well as create a safer environment for not only the kid using it, but also for the coach, the mom, and the dad.”

Trade Show Success

The Alberta Gift Show was wonderful this year.  Having completely redone the floor plan and consolidating the show in the new Northlands building in Edmonton has given the show new life.  Everyone I spoke with was pleased with the results.  Exhibitors are happy with the company groupings and Retailers are saying the show is much easier to navigate.

Thank you to Brenda and her team for all their work.

The Fresh-N products were part of the Made in Canada section of the show.  What we liked about this placement is that everything in the area was unique, as we are.

Alberta Gift Show – Booth 5227, Hall A – Made in Canada

The Alberta Gift Show is starting tomorrow Sunday, February 21st and runs until Wednesday, February 24th at Edmonton Northlands.

Made In Canada

I had an opportunity to walk through a bit of it today during set up.  Wow!  What a difference the new building makes.  The flow is better, the organization of booths is nicer, the venue is easier to move through and there are about 150 more booths than the August show.

We are located in Hall A, booth 5227, Made In Canada, just under the big 5200 sign hanging from the ceiling.  The booth is easy to find.

Check out this video about the gift show.  We’re featured twice!  Click here.

We’ve got some specials for you, so drop by.

Indoor Air Quality

The air quality inside your home can be 100X worse than the air outside and newer homes can be far worse than older ones says Mike Holmes in October 2009.  Newer homes are designed and built more air tight to increase the energy efficiency.  The result is that indoor air becomes trapped and the VOC’s ( Volatile Organic Compounds) that off-gas from furniture, building materials, carpets, mould and allergens build.  The bad air leads to allergic reactions and health concerns.

There are many things we can do to improve the air quality inside our homes.

Change your furnace filter often and use a HEPA filter that will trap particulates.

Ultraviolet light can be used to kill bacteria, mould and viruses.  UVC irradiates and breaks down microorganisms by disrupting their molecular bonds which makes them unable to reproduce and”kills” them.

Plants are another way to help the air quality. The top 5 plants, according to the University of Georgia, are:

  1. Purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa)
  2. English ivy (Hedera Helix)
  3. Variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa)
  4. Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus)
  5. Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida)

Look for natural cleaning products.  There are lots of microfibres on the market which use water and the fibres to clean.  Ha-Ra products are some of the best I’ve found.

We’ve also added a new product to our line, Home Fresh-N.  2 odour and VOC removing pouches that you can place in closets or around the house

Not all fruit and vegetables should be kept in the fridge

Did you know that you shouldn’t keep all your fruits and vegetables in the fridge?  I knew that bananas were kept on the counter, but I didn’t know that nectarines, plums and tomatoes shouldn’t be refrigerated either.

Other fruits and vegetables shouldn’t be stored together in your fridge.  That’s why you have two crispers.  Apples, apricots and cantaloupes emit a large volume of ethylene gas as they ripen.   They shouldn’t be stored with your broccoli and brussel sprouts.

You can download a pdf from the Suzuki Foundation which talks about which fruits and vegetables should be refrigerated, which shouldn’t be and which ones can be kept together.   The pdf has some great tips – click here for the pdf.

Our local radio station has a report each day by the “Queen of Green” from the Suzuki Foundation.  Lindsay Coulter is the Queen of Green and she has some great tips on greening your environment.
